:: Mission ::

The overall goal of the NextGRID project is the development of the models and the components of the next generation Grid architecture. One essential success factor to reach this goal is the production of well-developed, broadly supported standards proposals and to guide them through appropriate standards bodies like OASIS, OGF, or IETF. This is a task only to be achieved in co-operation with the Grid community, but the NextGRID consortium has the people and means to take the lead in certain areas and forward European standards development.

Especially NextGRID

:: Instruments ::

NextGRID has one work package explicitely dedicated to standards. This work package pursues two objectives. Firstly, it ensures that NextGRID's technical development is built upon existing well established and accepted standards, and secondly, in case such standards do not exist, it co-ordinates the contribution to the next generation of standards so the results of NextGRID can be realised in practical implementations. Practically this implies that from the descision which standards to used as a baseline for all developments, like for example WSRF or the OGSA Basic Profile, to the collaboration with other projects and interest groups all tasks are co-ordinated by the standards work package.

:: Results ::

In the course of the project, NextGRID produced significant results in the area of standards. To be especially emphasised are the leadership roles of NextGRID consortium members in OGF's Steering Group, OASIS' Web Services Resource Framework activity, and the WS-Agreement specification of OGF. Furthermore, numerous contributions to technical specifications, best practices, and standards implementations prepare the way to reach the objectives outlined above. The one to be highlighted here is the concept of Profiles which has been brought into the OGF and already lead to the specification of influencal profiles like the OGSA Base Profile.
