Abstract:
Emerging Grid technologies and services represent a paradigm
shift from today’s centralised IT systems and software provision
to tomorrow’s distributed utility computing. Over the last
five years Europe has invested about half a billion Euros in Grid
research through actions implemented on national and at EU levels.
This collective research effort, although often fragmented, has
put Europe into a privileged position. However, in order to successfully
translate Europe’s strength in the research domain into
economic business advantages, a reinforced commitment of industry
is required.
The main objectives of this high-level panel are: to discuss
R&D requirements for Grid research to satisfy the needs of
business and industry; whether the convergence of Web Services
and Grid Services will help accelerating the provision of industrial-strength
Grid middleware; how killer applications will look like for Grids
to demonstrate their business viability; and how European industry
and service providers can better capitalise on Europe’s
strength in Grid Technologies.
