The NextGRID Baseline Architecture

This document contains a straw man architecture for NextGRID proposed in October 2004 and revised thereafter in line with requests for a publicly available version. As a reference architecture it is not meant to mandate or even suggest what direction other projects (or even NextGRID) should take, but to act as a reference point for further work. It is also the starting point for the process of architecture design within NextGRID.

The classification of components and the identification of relationships between them are important aspects of the architecture and will form a framework for further refinement.

The specification of function and identification of interfaces necessary to realize the overall architecture, are the first step in refining the architectural definition. Where possible, it is desirable to use existing interfaces and specifications. In this first version of the NextGRID architecture, we believe that a significant portion of the architecture can be constructed from existing and evolving interfaces.
